When was the last time you cleaned your gutters?

If you had to think about it, you’re not alone. Most Cape Town homeowners only think about gutter maintenance when it’s already too late — after a heavy downpour, a stained ceiling, or water spilling over the edge of the roof like a waterfall.

At GutterFix Cape Town, we wanted to find out just how common this is. So in April 2025, we surveyed 117 homeowners across the city — from Claremont to Bellville — to understand their habits, triggers, and attitudes toward gutter maintenance.

The results confirmed what we’ve seen on the job for years: most homes are vulnerable, not because people don’t care, but because gutter maintenance isn’t on anyone’s radar — until damage sets in.

Let’s dig into the numbers.

The Stats

What We Found from 117 Cape Town Homeowners

  • 52% clean their gutters only once per year: Most homeowners wait for a problem before taking action, often after the first heavy rain of the season.
  • 18% clean them twice a year: This group tends to follow a seasonal routine, usually around April/May and again in September/October.
  • 21% haven’t cleaned their gutters in over two years: This is where most blockages, sagging gutters, and interior damp problems occur.
  • 9% have never cleaned their gutters: In these cases, gutters are often packed with soil, roots, and even growing plants.

What This Means for Homeowners

If half of Cape Town is only cleaning their gutters once a year and a full third are waiting two years or more, it’s no surprise we see the same problems over and over again.

When gutters are neglected, the damage doesn’t stay up on the roof. It creeps into the walls, the ceiling, and even the foundation of your home.

Here’s what we see every week:

  • Overflowing water during rainstorms, damaging fascia boards and ceilings
  • Damp patches and peeling paint near roof edges
  • Mould growth inside rooms from hidden moisture leaks
  • Pooling water around the foundation, leading to cracks or long-term instability
  • Gutter brackets ripping off walls from the weight of built-up debris

These aren’t just cosmetic issues, they affect the structure, safety, and resale value of your home.

The reality?
Cleaning your gutters once a year may not be enough and waiting until there’s a problem means you’re already dealing with damage.

What the Pros Recommend

The best way to avoid costly repairs? Clean before it clogs.

At GutterFix Cape Town, we’ve cleaned hundreds of gutters across the Southern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs, and Atlantic Seaboard and the pattern is always the same: the homes that stick to a schedule avoid the damage. The ones that wait? Almost always call us too late.

Here’s our professional recommendation for Cape Town homeowners:

🏠 Single-Storey Homes

Clean twice a year, ideally in May (before peak winter rain) and again in October (post-spring wind and leaves).

🏡 Double-Storey Homes

Clean twice a year minimum + check downpipes and roof debris each time. Extra height and wind exposure mean more risk.

🌳 Homes with Large Trees Overhead

Three cleans per year recommended. Leaves and twigs collect fast and clog early, especially in autumn and late spring.

If you don’t have trees and your gutters are built well, two cleans a year is usually enough to protect your home. But if you’re unsure, we always recommend booking one inspection now and setting reminders from there.

What Can Be Done

Most homeowners aren’t ignoring their gutters on purpose, they just don’t know where to start.

Some forget. Others don’t have the right ladder. Some think it’s a dirty job they’ll get to “next weekend,” until next weekend becomes next season…and next season becomes a problem.

That’s exactly why GutterFix Cape Town exists.
